Santa Cruz to Humbolt Bay

Humboldt Bay

I guess Eureka Humboldt County, CA is Where They grow a bunch of marijuana and They Are Actually going to vote on legalizing it here . We'll see how it goes .

We Heard a lot of rowdy drunk bums After last night going to bed , we HAD seen one do a spontaneous Back Flip and I looks like he's 60 + and it was perfect , like a gymnast He'd Been in a prior life, amazing, Sadly Even if alcohol induced . They sleep in a park pavilion area here by the city dock. I guess They get by But Still Seems sad They choose it (the ones That do) .

We got up, ate yummy omelets I made using the Pampered Chef chopper Scott's daughter Rachael That Gave me for my 50th Birthday ( what a sweetie ), I love that chopper , it does veggies quick and easy! !

Then we loaded all laundry Into the dinghy and rode to the dock , tied up and locked it to the city dock and Then carted All Our linens , towels, clothes etc. etc . to the Laundromat . It was super BUSY But It Was kind of cool to interact with the locals There. I met a nice gal and she Told me her husband HAD ADOPTED a 10 year old A Few years ago and this 10 year old That HAD Been addicted to Cocaine , can you believe that shit . So sad .
Anyway , her husband (they married after- I did this) , is in a program of parents help kids That If They Want to , to learn about tractors and They fix one up for an hour or two every day with the parent and if They Want They are ready When They enter a tractor pull contest and all the Entrants win something. But I guess the boy is doing real well and I Gave her a hug and said God Bless WHO HAD her husband said , if one kid is help it is all worth it and this is true. I believe in the ripple effect, large or small Each action has a ripple, let it be a good one eh ? It really Touch me, this story. I'm sure drugs effect Have Almost everyone now days and it is good to hear success stories of Those Who Influence Overcome Their negative . Especially the hard stuff . Even as we know alcohol is a drug, and nicotine . They Enslave Us, We Have to free ourselves in September .

We came back and unloaded , Scott checked the oil, and transmission. We thing the weather will allow us to move north tomorrow .

I feel I am acclimating a bit to this cooler weather and just layer up . I hate to be cold But if I find right dress I Do not Have to be cold. Already It's chilly here and Often foggy but Today Was really beautiful sunshine and Even with the chill! !

Humboldt Bay

We Moved off the dock tall Adjacent to the freakin 'tall fuel dock Called "England " After we Watered up the boat . It Was a crazy place to spend the night . The water rose up and down considerably and this Was not a floating dock But a fixed dock and Scott Had to readjust Our tie lines so That They Did Our cleats pull out of the deck of the boat . We Had to crawl / climb up onto the boards That lined the side of the dock and They Were green and slimy and HAD creosote all over them , ugh . But it work out.

We met today Some boaters from WA and They Were so sweet . Anne and Hugh on Serendipity. What nice people . We Spent only part of a day with them But Were fast friends. Bless them in Their travels South to Mexico.

Humboldt Bay

We pulled up anchor in the river Being After you remove the current That and lots of floating islands of grass is pretty nasty That likes to get caught on props and anything else .

We Had a fuel dock Finding the time as it does look like one. Usually it fuels like larger boats fishing boats.

We went grocery shopping at a co -op That Had a great selection. Kind of like a Whole Foods type store. Some reasonable and Some Things Were and Were not We Had to Do Without meats. The Cheap stores are way too far away But we've got plenty and can not Complain .

Humboldt Bay

We woke up and Scott made us cinnamon raisin rice stuff for breakfast. Then Scott tinkered on boat stuff and I cleaned , Gathered laundry, cooked chicken tortilla soup for lunch , Gathered trash etc to take to shore . Scott dropped the dinghy Into the water and we headed down the river and tied up at docks and city Some Walk into town. What a cute and artsy kind of feel.

We Walked all around the town and saw lots of neat cafes, bookstores , second hand and antique shops, unique clothing boutiques , theaters , etc. . Some Victorian buildings. They are building a very neat Along the waterfront walkway with brick and neat That lamp posts look like lighthouses . Lots of murals on buildings. Actually I saw a cool (never thought I'd Say That about graffiti) graffiti picture on an old train engine, Some Kind of face. Took a picture of it , great artist whoever did it .

I saw a lady talking to herself and vehemently Swearing at the Wind , sad . Drugs ? Mental Illness ? Not sure, she wasn't But That Was old dressed like she might be homeless or maybe just poor. How do These people make it ? I Do not Know How They Feed Themselves or function , very sad .

Asked to biker Scott we saw where to buy food and I Directed us to a neat co -op store, it was pretty much just like Whole Foods. We Bought a couple peaches , a loaf of bread , yummy Some Brand Brown Cow maple yogurt and a small Perumvian darkchocolate bar. We Asked the gal WHERE to laundrymat is. Yes, we Already Have More laundry. When we travel, Things get wet and Often we end up with more towels and Such to launder , she Told us Where the Closest one is , tomorrow we will take it in and get it done and do some more grocery shopping cart and big with Our back pack in tow . We ate the Peruvian dark chocolate bar as We Walked back to the dinghy . It Was So Good , treat first in a long time, YUMMMMM ... ..

Some homeless people we saw in A Certain walking back area , it is very sad . They cluster together and seem to Have nowhere to go , nowhere to be. Existing and trying to get by . It makes me Grateful I Have somewhere of my own to go .

We untied the dinghy and sped back up the river ( down / up ?) anyway , back to boat and Scott Our Well Deserved Had a nap in Our Sun Room / dodger / cockpit as the sun Was Was out and the fog lift, yeah. I am sitting here typing this up and making a store list for tomorrow .

We will be here Through Sunday or so Most Likely as the weather is bad and There Is gail force wind warning and small craft advisory 's. We Heard a lot of action on this trip Regarding boaters in trouble , pretty scary stuff, so we are going to play it safe.

Bodega Bay to Humboldt Bay ( Eureka , CA)

Lots of Seaweed in Bodega Bay and when to we awoke (6:00 am) , Our boat was " TILTING "on ITS side, the water / low tide Was So we Could not move . So We Had to Wait Until 8:50 a.m. and barely eeked Our Way out of this windy and shallow area.

There Was an unfortunate old sailboat stuck in the muck out by the entrance weitere Told That Some sad story of someone or weather Either Not Knowing how to navigate the channel and Shoals.

Scott Breach saw whales while I Was Below , They Did not really much surface After That, I Was bummed I missed it . There Has not Been a whole lot of wildlife Lately .
We Have Seen Some cool White Egret (Crane looking) birds They are definitely beautiful and near the shores . We did see for a FEW moments Some white bellied dolphins ( Will Have to look up What Kind They Are ) by playing Our bow , Plowed They Were Through the water and fast ( we where going too fast ), and about all you see Could Was They splash on top WHERE swam underwater and Their white bellies . One dolphin did a 360 spinning around for more. Wonderer Scott , as the weather and you Were building, if we where going the right way or the dolphins Were warning us to go back , ( much too late for That Though .) Come to find out, it did get really crazy and It Was Becoming harder to Make Headway , pushing us back on Our arrival time and making the ride rough, like a bucking horse, Through the waves smashing over and over . I dreaded going to the bathroom , as Every Time I went down , I'd get Nauseous and barely hold it down When I surfaced in Our dodger / cockpit area for air again . I did throw up eleven o'clock on the trip and of course That was not fun, I Had not Been Able to eat anything so it wasn't That Bad , as There Was nothing except to eat up stomach acid, yuck .

We started to hear a weird noise about 3 hours or so prior to and anchoring Arriving in Eureka. Scott Thinks it is a cutlass bearing near the prop. Also It might be stuck on the prop seaweed and wearing on it after- going, going, going for so long . Scott Will Have to don scuba gear and wetsuit historical Once Again Investigate eleven o'clock and anchored .

We made it down the windy channel in the fog and darkness , Through Our Peering out front " Windshield " And Also watching like hawks around and watching the chartplotter like crazy . We Were Both tired , exhausted really After 38 + hours of non -stop sailing north in strong winds and high you , slamming forth in Our Faithful boat BLISS . The channel / bar you crazy tide surges and currents going back Into What is a river , WHERE Eventually we anchored .

Drakes Bay to Half Moon
12 to 24 knot winds all day . Had an interesting experience When We Had to Go Between a tanker on one side and large on the ship by Other Converging on us in the middle . Just made it out of the way , a little exciting But Though we where pretty safe .

Half Moon Bay
Sat in Harbor
We Were Awakened in the night by people on a nearby (and Somewhat derelict sailboat That Looked Like It Had not gone anywhere for a LONG time) , and Yelling Cursing and fighting . They finally quit and it Did not sound like There Was violence ( I Would Have Called or someone ), so we went back to sleep . Not a nice way to wake up and sad to see people foul Saying Such Things to Each Other .

Not a very nice bay, a little disappointing as it has Such a charming name. It Was kind of dirty in the way , There Was a lot of grass and it smelled kind of nasty .

Not one of my faves .

We just did projects around the boat and Wait to hear the weather. I finally got Coverage and checked it out for us on the internet.

Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay

Early in the morning (6:00 am), we went to the fuel dock across the way again and Anna , (a lovely German accent she HAD ) , help us fuel up and Suggested we wait til the evening to leave as you calm down Then in That area, so we Moved to the end of That dock and tied up (as a boat HAD just left and There Was a spot on That dock now, how handy ). We left late and Anna was Right , It Was a nice calm sail .

We left at 10:10 at night and Arrived at Half Moon Bay

Cont Thursday , August 19, 2010
Lovely and playful Sea Otters acting greeter us near the fuel dock in Santa Cruz. They Were closed (close at noon) , Very resort feeling atmosphere here . Nice area. There is a boardwalk with amusement park rides , small train ride, the works (kind of Like Utah Lagoon for you readers ) right on the beach and They Have Music concerts too . The beach was very nice and a cool lighthouse with huge cement pilings . Lots of people walking around Enjoying the scene . We Were Allowed to tie onto the dock across from the fuel dock as per the people at the harbor masters office . We enjoyed nice comfort There. We packed up the laundry and Walk to the laundry mat and ate a hamburger way too expensive , But it was good. Later we took a long walk to the boardwalk and took in all the sights and watched scary kids scream on the rides . We Had to run around a big rock Dividing the two beaches and time it just right or the huge waves breaking Swamped Would Have Us Into the ocean . We saw cool Sandcastles and people on the beach soaking up the day .
