Coos Bay OR, evening Coos Bay to Newport, OR
Foggy Morning, chilly and damp, the wonderful sun finally came through and we hung damp things out to dry and cleaned up a good deal.
We are going to leave tonight around 5:00 and sail up to Newport, we have to time it all because of the flood tides and such, it’s kind of complicated figuring out all this sometimes.
I made some cornbread in the cast iron dutch oven pot I have, (Love that thing) and we’ll see if it’s good later with some hot tea to keep warmed up.

Port Orford, OR to Coos Bay, OR
Had a nice motor with a South wind to help even up the coast. Foggy but at least we could see for a little ways. Regardless we turned our VHS automatic Fog Horn on and it blasts a toot every so often, to let other boats know we’re around in case they don’t have the AIS system to see us on their chartplotter.
Mostly fisherman around here and they haven’t seemed to use AIS as we’ve come upon them in the fog, like when we were entering the mouth of Coos Bay fighting hard to cross the bar and stay in the safe zone and suddenly there is a big fishing boat, we both veered and were fine but we didn’t even know he was there. Before you enter these places with bars and extreme flows of water in and out and breakers to boot, you have to contact the Coast Guard for that area and get a “Bar Report”, of course this is to your advantage as sometimes it is too hazardous to enter and you have to wait or SAIL ON.
We got in before total dark so that was good despite the fog.
Anchored fine and slept great.

Port Orford
Waiting for good weather to head north again.
We had a baby HUMPBACK WHALE spout right by the boat, it stayed around us for hours in the bay, So cool. It must have been feeding. I love nature, it is so exciting and it makes all the hassles worth it!!!
We have found new leaks around the boat, but this is common I guess. UGH, I hate opening a cupboard and finding wet gooey things. Luckily though, I put everything in Ziplocks, cause I’ve learned the hard way. Hawai’i was so humid I did it there too, otherwise it would rot or worse “grow”!!!!!

Port Orford
Just hanging on the boat, going through lots of pictures from our visit home and from our travels. Takes time and energy, so I do it when I can.
Scott went into town and got a few things while I did computer stuff and cleaning.
He gave a nice lady on another sailboat a ride into town so she could get ice for her refrigerator. A lot of people just use ice in their fridges and save the power. She has an old dog who unfortunately is on it’s last leg. She is traveling alone at around 65 years of age, coming down from Canada and going to winter in San Francisco. Tough lady. I think she’ll want another dog for company if this one goes. It would get lonely I would think. Pretty tough gal, she even pulls her anchor in by hand!!!
I spoke to my 16 year old step son I helped raise, who is with my ex-husband in Southern Utah and it was nice to catch up. He’s a good kid, I miss him. He is way into bikes and that’s good for him I feel.

Crescent City to Port Orford
Crescent City was quite plain all in all but people were friendly enough.
It seemed no one really planned the layout.
Apparently there are more churches and bars here per capita, but what I saw TONS OF were Barber and Beauty Shops, bizarre really. So we got Scott's hair cut, why not. It needed it badly and she did a great job.
They had a terrible tsunami here in the 1960’s and it wiped stuff out really bad. Maybe that accounts for the haphazard city planning, who knows.

Trinidad to Crescent City
Traveled in fairly rough seas and wind and anchored in Crescent City.
We took a bus to see the Giant Redwood Trees and it was awesome. Our camera didn’t work so well that day, don’t know why but almost every picture was fuzzy. BUMMER… Anyway, it was beautiful, ferns, giant giant trees, it smelled so good and fresh. We walked around the trails, I saw a yellow banana slug (I read about them in a local free newspaper), saw cool fungus on the sides of the trees and moss. I love Moss, don’t know why but it’s cool. We ate our lunch of apples, sandwiches, crackers on some rocks by the trail. So quiet and so peaceful. Love those honkin’ trees!!!
We tried to spot a bus coming back down the canyon we were in (as this wasn’t a usual stop they made) but couldn’t find one and were so tired of waiting by the road scoping it out, so we bummed a ride from a German physicist professor who lectures here in the US and his wife. Very sweet people and they loved their German speaking GPS in their rental car. We had to walk quite a way still to get to our boat from where we had them drop us off. We were glad to rest our bones after our long but awesome day.
Left at Midnight to get to Port Orford

Trinidad
Went for a nice bikeride approx. 15 miles. I was weak but kept at it and didn’t give up. I so loved the area. Big trees, lots of foliage, great trails. Some parts reminded me of places on the Big Island of Hawai’i that were my old stomping grounds. I felt like I was there for a minute, it was nice. We found more blackberries and ate them up. They are thick in this area. Nice day and good exercise.

Humbolt to Trinidad
Went into town and walked around. Really beautiful coastal views. Everyone landscapes so nicely here. Blackberries grow wild and we foraged like bears on them. YUMMMMM. Kinda small town feel with a hippy like flavor and lots of fisherman working guys. Nice people. I love the beach on the other side of the inlet or bay where we are. Picturesque although a bit nippy.
